MANKATO — A Blue Earth County deputy was assaulted after responding to a Sunday morning domestic assault report on the 900 block of Patriot Drive, an apartment complex north of the Madison East Center.
Officers were responding to a call just before 7 a.m. from a female requesting 911 assistance, according to Mankato Police. The female was able to leave a residence at 920 Patriot Drive, according to police.
The call prompted the Blue Earth County Emergency Medical Services and Mankato Fire Department to establish staging in the Madison East Center parking lot.
Reports indicated officers responded to hear noises within the apartment and a male suspect had a felony warrant for his arrest. The female who asked for 911 assistance reported the suspect remained in the apartment so officers obtained a search warrant.
Officers attempted to make phone contact, knocked on the door, and tried to make verbal contact with the suspect, who did not respond. Officers then used a key to the apartment but were unable to gain access as the suspect had barricaded himself behind the door, according to reports.
When officers finally made verbal contact, the suspect was uncooperative and communicated with other people to come to his aid. One such individual arrived, refused to depart the area, and threatened Blue Earth County deputies, according to reports. The man was eventually arrested after assaulting a deputy.
Officers continued to communicate with the male suspect in the apartment, who then removed the barricade and exited into the hallway. He was taken into custody and brought to the Blue Earth County Jail without incident.
The man faces charges of felony domestic assault, felony domestic assault by strangulation, and 5th degree controlled substance possession.
The Mankato Department of Public Safety was assisted by the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office, Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office, North Mankato Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol and Mayo Ambulance.
