HAVERHILL — Children in Haverhill who want to surprise their family members with Christmas presents but don’t have the money to do it will be treated to a free shopping spree through the Heroes and Helpers program hosted by Haverhill police and Firefighters Local 1011. The program, now in its fifth year, recently received a $2,000 donation from Caroline Pineau, owner of Stem, a cannabis shop on Washington Street. Pineau teamed up with one of her suppliers, Greencare Collective, a Massachusetts cultivator.
“They sold one of their products to us for a discount and we donated the profits to Heroes for Helpers,” Pineau said. “It was a joint effort and we’re thrilled to support this program.”
Police Sgt. Kevin Lynch said the school resource officers he supervises, Nicole Donnelly, Gillian Privitera and Milady Figueroa help identify children in need then direct a host of volunteers who will take about 150 children shopping at the local Target store on Saturday, Dec. 16. Volunteer helpers will include Haverhill police and firefighters, members of Pridestar Trinity EMS, teachers, and others who play a role in the lives of these children. Each child will receive between $125 and $150 to shop.
The program begins at noon on Saturday at Haverhill High School with a pizza party then the children will be transported by bus to Target. When they return to the high school their gifts will be wrapped by students in various service clubs and sports teams.
