The cause of a fatal fire on Saunders Settlement Road in Lewiston is currently under investigation.
The fire at 2253 Saunders Settlement Road was reported about 9:20 p.m. Friday night. A Lewiston police officer was first on the scene and reported heavy fire with a person trapped inside. The officer attempted to reach the victim but was unable to do so.
Sanborn Fire Co. and Lewiston Fire Co. No. 2, along with several other fire companies responded and extinguished the fire. The victim was found dead inside the home. His name was being withheld pending notification of family.
The Lewiston police officer was treated at Erie County Medical Center for burns to his hands and smoke inhalation and later released.
Niagara County Origin and Cause is investigating the fire.
The Red Cross is assisting other occupants of the home.
