On Tuesday night, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that the Boston Red Sox traded outfielder Alex Verdugo to the New York Yankees in exchange for relief pitcher Greg Weissert and prospects Richard Fitts and Nicholas Judice also pitchers.
Verdugo, who came to the Red Sox from the Dodgers in the Mookie Betts trade, batted .264 this past season with 13 home runs, 54 RBI and scored 81 runs. He spent four years in Boston.
Weissert appeared in 17 games this past season for the Yankees, finishing with a 0-0 record and a 4,05 ERA. He struck out 22 batters over 20 innings of work. In 2022, he appeared in 12 games and finished with a 3-0 record and a 5.56 ERA.
Fitts was drafted by the Yankees in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB Amateur Draft out of Auburn University. A right-handed starting pitcher, he finished 11-5 with a 3.48 ERA in 27 starts for the AA Somerset Patriots.
Judice, 6-feet-8 and 230 pounds, was selected this past June in the eighth round, after four years at the University of Louisiana Monroe.
