Hanceville’s varsity boys outlasted Vinemont on Tuesday night for a 51-47 home victory.
The Bulldogs (5-5) led 22-21 at halftime but began to distance themselves from the visiting team and built a 45-35 advantage midway through the fourth quarter.
The Eagles, though, responded with a 9-2 run to cut their deficit to 47-44 with less than a minute left in the game.
But free throws by JT Davis and Noah Douglas — the latter’s coming with 12.1 seconds remaining — allowed the Purple and Gold to hold off Vinemont (6-4) for the win.
In doing so, Hanceville held the Eagles to their second-lowest scoring output of the season.

Coach Speak
“Coach (Preston) Boyd does such a great job at Vinemont and we knew it was going to be a battle. For us, it’s a team win. We have to get our defense to create our offense and we finally did that in this game. We finally hit some shots, too. Our defense has to be our expectation every night. If we can do that, we can put ourselves in a position to win. That’s all I can ask for.” — Hanceville’s Stephen Chandler
Varsity Girls
Vinemont 65, Hanceville 41: The Eagles made nine 3-pointers and had three double-digit scorers en route to Tuesday’s county and road victory over the Bulldogs.
Vinemont (8-4) built a 16-11 lead after the first quarter and continued to pad its cushion from there, using its tempo and defense to create scoring opportunities throughout the contest.

Coach Speak
“We stayed in rhythm when we kept the tempo in our favor. Any time we let the tempo slow down, we don’t shoot well or play well defensively. I felt like we could have pushed the tempo even more than we did tonight, but we did a pretty good job.” — Vinemont’s James Brown
