Seven years.
Four championships.
Four undefeated seasons.
A combined record of 124-7-10 between four years at Andover High (senior year was shortened to seven games and no tournament due to COVID) and three years at Middlebury College.
That’s the field hockey resume of junior forward Hanna Medwar.
If that’s not impressive enough, how about the kicker?
Medwar is also a two-time selection for the National Field Hockey Coaches Association’s National Academy Team, sporting a 3.81 grade point average.
This past Saturday, Medwar and her Middlebury teammates celebrated the program’s sixth straight Division 3 National Championship with a 2-0 win over Johns Hopkins. The Panthers finished 22-0, becoming the fourth team in program history to finish undefeated (1971, 1973 and 2021 as the others).
Medwar came off the bench in the championship game and didn’t score, but in the four wins leading up to it, she figured in with a goal and assist in the opening 7-0 win over William and Mary, and then assisted on the eventual game-winning goal in the second round 3-0 win over Messiah.
In high school, she was a three-time Eagle-Tribune All-Star, who as a center-midfielder finished her career with 49 goals, with 17 goals and 18 assists her junior year, leading the team to the Eastern Mass semifinals, one of just two teams she didn’t win a championship with.
“I have gotten so lucky. In high school, I had coach (Maureen) Noone who led our team to great successes and she created a unique environment which was successful which is actually pretty similar to my college team here,” said Medwar. “Everything here has just been unbelievable. There’s really no ups and downs, it’s just utter consistency and that is what differentiates us from all of the other teams.”
Since arriving at Middlebury, Medwar has started as a few games, but mostly has been a substitute on the forward line but for good reason.
“Hanna is a starter quality forward who happens to have two senior All-Americans (Audrey Lazar and Katie George in front of her), and we happen to play with just two forwards,” said Middlebury head coach Katharine DeLorenzo.
As a freshman, Medwar played in 11 games and ended with one assist. Last year she played in 20 games and finished with 7 goals and 1 assist. This year she finished with 6 goals and 4 assists. She has 13 goals in her career coming on just 41 shots, which is a 32% rate.
“Hanna is so smart with the way she presses and is able to take the ball without a foul, as was shown in (Saturday’s) game when she pressed, took the ball and started a counter-attack,” said DeLorenzo. “She’s just a grinder, she sticks her face in it and she helps people score. She’s been absolutely unstoppable in terms of her growth. She has increased her speed, power and tactical understanding and has become a real force.”
Middlebury has a combined record of 65-1 in Medwar’s three seasons.
“It’s challenging, but at the same time it’s just so rewarding getting to that National Championship game,” she said. “It’s every little struggle, every single practice and all of that preparation you put in, it’s just all worth it. Being on this team, it’s just bigger than yourself, it’s something that’s bigger than your own individual goals. You’re part of something that’s quite bigger than any individual teammate. The team is just the number one priority.”
