PLATTSBURGH — Along with a new mayor, the City of Plattsburgh ushered in a new era for its Ward 6 councilor seat Thursday as well.
Amy Collin, who beat out two-term incumbent councilor Jeff Moore in the June Democratic Primary Election and went unopposed in the November General Election, was sworn-in just before new Mayor Wendell Hughes took his oath of office in City Hall.
Collin said after the ceremony that she was excited to be a part of a “fresh team.”
“I think a lot can happen with people being respectful of each other and thoughtful,” she said.
“I think everybody who’s on the council is smart and they’re invested in what they’re doing and I’m just looking forward to being part of that team.”
OPIOID GRANT FUNDS
Of immediate issues she hopes to tackle, Collin said she hopes to see the city put any and all opioid grant money to good use in the future.
“There’s so much work that can be done in the community for mental health and whether it’s suicide prevention or opioid, there’s so much work to be done, and there are a lot of good people doing the work already,” she said.
“So let’s find out where the gaps are and how that money can really fit in and kind of tie things together.”
WARD 2 SEAT
Collin said she’d like to see the Ward 2 seat, left vacant late last year when Jacob Avery resigned, filled quickly as well.
“I think it’s valuable to have it filled quickly, but not without really looking at who the best fit is. So I’m trusting the process and that he’ll (Hughes) really vet somebody,” she said.
“I think every time there’s an appointment, we should consider it carefully and hope that they’re a good fit for that ward and for the team.”
