Wilson earning ice time
Now a sophomore for the Plymouth State women’s hockey team, Teagan Wilson continues to earn more ice time. The former Daily News MVP goalie and Salisbury native has already started four games this winter for the Panthers (6-3-0), and holds a 2-2 record with a 2.72 goals against average.
With two-thirds of the season still left, Wilson is already over halfway to her totals last year in appearances (2024: 7; 2025: 4) and overall minutes on the ice (2024: 421:11; 2025: 242:35).
Donovan debuts at UMass Amherst
The collegiate track career is officially under way for Aiden Donovan.
Our reigning two-time Daily News Outdoor Track MVP, the big-time shot putter made his debut for the UMass Amherst indoor team at the UConn tri-meet a couple of weeks ago. It wasn’t his best performance with a pair of fouls, but Donovan was still able to muscle out a 45-10 to place fourth in the event.
A solid start, but we all know there’s still plenty of room for improvement.
Donovan broke both the indoor (54-7.75) and outdoor (59-0) shot put record during his time at Amesbury High. He also broke the school’s discus record at last year’s CAL Open (171-11).
Michael Sanchez, too
Another former Amesbury football and track star, Michael Sanchez, also made his debut for the UMass Amherst indoor track team at the UConn tri-meet. The elite freshman sprinter placed fifth in the 300-meter (36.90), and also ran on the fifth-place 4×400 relay team (3:32.24).
Sanchez left Amesbury as both a two-time Daily News Indoor and Outdoor Track All-Star. He broke the outdoor school records in the 100 (10.93), 200 (22.29), 400 (49.43) and with both the 4×100 (44.45) and 4×400 relay teams (3:27.60), and also indoor school records in the 55-meter (6.65), 300 (35.68) and with the 4×200 relay team (1:32.85).
Major honor for Minor
Georgetown native James Minor, a junior center back for the St. John’s Prep boys soccer team, was recently named a Salem News Soccer All-Star. And this after he earned selections to both the All-EMass First Team and All-Catholic Conference First Team.
Minor, who carries an impressive 4.2 GPA, scored three goals for the Division 1 state semifinalists this year, while of course also serving as a lockdown force on defense. His favorite game of the year was the team’s quarterfinal triumph over Concord-Carlisle, 2-1.
Captains Corner
Captains Corner submissions are now being accepted for the 2024-25 winter season. A couple have already rolled in, but there are still plenty of local sports teams that haven’t been submitted. Coaches — or parents or the athletes themselves — who would like their captains featured are welcome to submit a photo to kgaudette@newburyportnews.com. Photos should have all captains featured and ideally be in their jerseys.
