Testing and interviews are currently underway for the start of the next Practical Nursing class at Orleans/Niagara BOCES, scheduled to start in March. Incoming students may be eligible for tuition funding through the state’s new Career Pathways Training (CPT) program.
The BOCES program, delivered in less than one year, incorporates theory, lab, medication dosage calculation, and clinical training. Under Lead Teacher Jennifer Peters, the class meets four days per week at the Orleans/Niagara BOCES’ Lockport Community Education Center at 50 Main Street in Lockport with the fifth day reserved for lab evaluations and additional study.
The current class started their clinical training in May, and since then have divided their time between the Lockport Community Education Center and clinical sites in the area.
On Nov. 20, the current Practical Nursing (LPN) class received important training at the Lockport YWCA on domestic abuse with a focus on strangulation response.
Following graduation in February, successful students will be eligible to take the NCLEX-PN exam for New York State licensure as LPNs.
CPT aims to provide financial support to close the gap for students who might struggle to cover tuition for nursing programs. More information on the CPT training fund can be found at: https://www.health.ny.gov/health_care/medicaid/redesign/cpt_program/
