WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — No. 8 Petersburg heads to unbeaten and top-ranked Tug Valley in the Class A state quarterfinals Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Vikings (6-5), under first-year coach Shane Shockey, picked up their first postseason victory in school history last week, defeating No. 9 River View, 49-8. The game also marked Petersburg’s first home playoff game ever.
Tug Valley, of Williamson, West Virginia, in northern Mingo County, is 11-0 and dispatched Tolsia, 48-8, in the first round.
The undefeated season was the first in Panthers history.
Freshman quarterback Payton Metheny threw for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the Vikings’ playoff opener.
Metheny has thrown for 1,758 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, adding 369 yards and nine scores on the ground.
Peyton Tingler is his top target, catching 26 passes for 581 yards and nine scores. Kaleb Kuhn has 29 receptions for 452 yards and six TDs, and Trace Rohrbaugh has 728 yards of scrimmage and eight touchdowns.
Tug Valley quarterback Preston May threw for 482 yards and six touchdowns last week to up his season totals to 2,577 passing yards and 34 touchdowns — both school records.
Cameron Slone has 64 catches for 1,232 yards and 14 touchdowns, and Bryson Elia has rushed for 1,195 yards and has 22 total touchdowns.
