Fairfield Glade Hikers will explore the 7-mile Rock Creek Loop in the Big South Fork River and Recreation Area for their next adventure Nov. 15.
The trail starts at Hattie Blevins Cemetery, then drops down and follows Rock Creek and Massey Branch for most of the way around the loop. A streamside walk is always beautiful.
One segment of the trail goes through a narrow gorge with steep sides and interesting rock formations line both sides.
Hikers will follow the path of a narrow-gage railroad operated by Stearns Coal and Lumber Co. that ran through this region. The area is heavily wooded with hemlocks, beech trees and big leaf magnolias, in addition to rhododendron and mountain laurel. Hikers will also see a small waterfall along the way.
Pack a lunch to eat on the trail, and bring plenty of water. There are no facilities at the trailhead.
The drive to the Rock Creek Trailhead is 62 miles one way, and the cost for riders carpooling is $5.
Hikers will leave Fairfield Glade at 8 a.m. sharp for the 1-hour, 30-minute drive. Return is estimated at 4 p.m.
The trail is rated moderate plus, with some steep sections, some with steps, and bridge crossings. The trail is narrow in places with steep dropoffs and can be slippery with fallen leaves.
Hiking has risks, and safety is a high priority on every outing. The hiking group assumes no collective or individual liability for any mishaps.
Hiking is at one’s own risk. Participants should be in good physical condition. Walking on paved and level surfaces does not compare with hiking on uneven trails with elevation changes.
Hikers are asked to assess their individual level of fitness to the difficulty of the hike so they can keep up with the group.
