Hayden Robinson rushed for two touchdowns and recorded two interceptions, Vinemont’s defense put together an outstanding effort on the road and the Eagles downed Oakman 20-7 on Friday night to punch their ticket to the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.
With the victory, Vinemont also improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in Class 3A, Region 5 play.
“This is a great win,” Eagles coach Stephen Robinson said. “I’ve never been more proud of a group of kids. We faced lots of adversity tonight — bad first quarter, two starters went down, lots of guys banged up. Our perseverance … we just kept playing, man. We were tougher in that fourth quarter.”
Robinson’s first touchdown run came in the first half as Vinemont trailed 7-6 at halftime.
Rush Sandlin put the Eagles ahead with a 7-yard scoring scamper late in the third quarter and the Red and White defense kept it there until Robinson put the game on ice with a 7-yard touchdown run of his own at the 1:38 mark of the final frame.
“Our defense played unreal tonight,” Stephen Robinson said. “The only touchdown they had came on a short field. Just an unreal job by our players and coaches preparing for this week.”
Vinemont hosts No. 9 Winfield next week.
