ELK RAPIDS — Two soccer teams that have battled injuries to top players duked it out Tuesday, with Elk Rapids coming out on top 2-0 against Traverse City St. Francis.
The Elks lost star senior forward Noah Hilley in the season’s first game to a torn ACL and fought through injuries to their top pair of goalkeepers this season. St. Francis lost senior captain James Theunte to a torn ACL not far into the campaign.
Will Vanderheide connected with Jonah Denherder off a throw-in for a first-half goal to give Elk Rapids a 1-0 lead. Drew Plum hit Denherder with a crossing pass for a second goal for a 2-0 halftime lead that stood up as the final score.
“We’re basically back to 100 percent now,” Elk Rapids head coach Nate Plum said, noting that Hilley wouldn’t be back this season. “It’s been a different season for us. We have three freshmen up on varsity.”
After the 2-0 win in Tuesday’s nonconference boys soccer game at Elk Rapids, the Elks (10-6-1, 7-1 Northern Shores Conference) travel Thursday to league-leading Grayling (17-1, 11-0 Northern Shores) for a key battle that could determine the new league’s first champion.
Jake Garrow and Noah Bogard led the Elks defense to its first consecutive shutout and ninth of the season.
