One suspect was detained Monday, Sept. 30, after the Cullman Police Department responded to a call from CSX about a vehicle on the tracks at the Mitchell Road crossing.
According to a statement from the city of Cullman, the vehicle rammed into a patrol vehicle shortly after responding officers arrived at the scene, which led to a standoff.
“Despite efforts to negotiate a peaceful surrender, the suspect continued to ram police vehicles. CPD deployed stinger spikes, deflating the suspect’s tires,” the statement said.
Officers were able to execute a PIT maneuver and apprehend the suspect, who has yet to be identified, as the vehicle entered the nearby property owned by Ingram Farms.
“Our officers’ quick response and professional handling of this dangerous situation prevented what could have been a much worse outcome,” Chief Joey Duncan said in the release.
Duncan was unable to discuss whether the suspect appeared to being a mental health crisis or if they had appeared to be intoxicated when detained in a follow-up conversation with The Times.
“At this time, it is still under investigation and as soon as we can, we will provide more information,” Duncan said.
CPD said it remains committed to “ensuring public safety while addressing sensitive situations with appropriate care and professionalism.”
