PERU — Thursday’s showers made it a perfect day to be inside for organizers of the The Peru Community Church Granny’s Attic Unique Boutique Sale, which starts Saturday, Sept. 28 promptly at 9 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m.
Those seeking deeper bargains can get them on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. when most items are half-price, with a “bag sale” from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The sale is held in the church’s Fellowship Center main hall at 13 Elm St., Peru, at the corner of Routes 22 and 22B.
“I believe that we’ve got more items and more of a variety than we’ve ever had,” Barb Benkwitt, Granny’s Attic coordinator, said.
“People have been very generous. We’ve been organizing and pricing for the past several days. We’ve got everything from holiday décor from Halloween right through to Easter of next year.”
Donated items range from books to toys to kitchen ware, dishes and glassware, games & puzzles, table linens and blankets, small appliances, furniture, jewelry, original art, prints, picture frames.
Interesting specialty items on display so far include a mirrored dresser, wooden sewing machine stand, wader fishing boots, wooden bed frame, and antique linens and saws.
“Rocking chair, old antique dressers that are over 100 years old,” she said.
“We’ve got a couple of televisions, which we weren’t really asking for. They work.”
Saturday also features a bake sale with lots of delicious cookies, cakes, breads and more, and gluten-free options.
Proceeds from the Granny’s Attic Boutique & Bake Sale support the church’s mission locally and beyond. The Peru Community Church hosts Girl Scouts, 4H, Scouts, Robotics Teams, Peru Lions Club, RSVP Exercisers, AA, and other not-for-profits at no charge to the group or individuals.
The main hall is also available for private rental.
“This supports the missions and the programs of the church,” Benkwitt said.
“Part of that is operations, too. We support the Girls Scouts and 4-H, Robotics Team and other groups that use the downstairs of our big Fellowship Hall. They have a space to meet, which is good.”
Local church missions include the Food Shelf and JCEO and international missions of the Presbyterian and Methodist denominations.
“It spreads all around as part of our mission all over,” she said.
“We do a variety of different things.”
The Peru Community Church celebrates more than 200 years of ministry to Peru and the surrounding areas. The church is a federation of the United Methodist and Presbyterian USA denominations (Protestant).
Worship services are Sundays at 9 a.m. in the historic 1833 sanctuary at 12 Elm St, both in person and via Zoom, led by the Reverend Peggi Eller.
