Local baseball diehards may remember the name Cam Willis.
Especially if you live in Georgetown.
Once a standout middle infielder for the Royals, Willis helped the program reach the Division 5 semifinals back in 2022 as a sophomore, followed by a run to the quarterfinals in 2023. But, with one year of high school remaining, it was odd not seeing him in the Royals’ run to the state championship game this past spring.
Well, that’s because after the 2023 school year, Willis transferred to the Frederick Gunn School in Washington, Connecticut, where he repeated his junior year. He excelled for the program last season, and as a result, just recently announced his commitment to continue playing baseball at Roger Williams University.
Willis is now a senior at the Gunn, where he also plays quarterback for the football team along with being the starting shortstop in baseball. He will be studying personal finance and business at Roger Williams as a member of the class of 2029.
But even though Cam left, there is still a “Willis” at Georgetown Regional.
His younger sister, Olivia Willis, is a sophomore and a midfielder for the girls soccer team this fall.
White picks up major honor
Rowley native Thomas White is shooting up the MLB top prospects list.
The 6-foot-5 lefty pitcher spent the season between Single-A and High-A in the Miami Marlins organization, and on Thursday was just named the Midwest League’s Top MLB Prospect. After delivering a 3.18 ERA in eight Single-A starts, he was promoted to the Beloit Sky Carp in High-A on May 28 and immediately dominated. He would strike out 76 batters across 13 starts, finishing the year with a system-leading 120 strikeouts while posting a better ERA (2.61) and WHIP (1.16) at the higher level.
White is now the No. 43 prospect in all of baseball per MLB.com — as well as the No. 1 prospect in the Marlins’ system.
