NEWBURYPORT — Registered dietitian Leigh Hartwell of AgeSpan will speak about the importance of an anti-inflammatory diet Wednesday, Sept. 18, when she visits the Newburyport Senior/Community Center.
Hartwell will explain the significance of getting all the nutrients the body needs along with avoiding foods that might cause chronic inflammation – a serious health concern linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression and Alzheimer’s disease, according to a news release.
The program, from 1 to 2:15 p.m., is sponsored by the Greater Newburyport Village as part of its Village Talk series.
Hartwell will also talk about the services AgeSpan provides in Greater Newburyport to help people maintain their independence, health and safety as they age.
She earned her bachelor of science degree in natural resource conservation from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and worked for years as a gardener, prompting her to pursue a master of science in nutrition sciences from Framingham State University.
Hartwell focuses on the Meals on Wheels program, conducting nutrition analysis for 10 menus, including medically tailored and culturally sensitive meals. In addition, she provides one-on-one home visits to teach people how to properly manage their diet to optimize their health.
A complimentary lunch is available before the talk courtesy of the Friends of the Council on Aging and the Greater Newburyport Village. Call the Senior/Community Center at 978-462-0430.
Village Talks are offered by the Greater Newburyport Village at no cost for the enrichment of the community. They are usually held the third Wednesday of the month.
