VOLLEYBALL
Salem 3, Saugus 2: The Witches won their home opener in dramatic fashion, taking an 18-25, 25-12, 26-24, 20-25, 15-4 victory as captain Annie Thornett and fellow junior outside hitter Liv Loux both finished with 10 kills. Sophomore Gueladio Bah turned in her best performance of the season as well, finishing with five kills and six aces on 100 percent serving. Mia Silva, a junior captain, added a career high 29 assists and three aces, with 10th grader Hawa Bah adding 11 digs to the Salem cause.
Danvers 3, Beverly 0: Audrey Lapine served up eight saves to spark the Falcons to a 25-18, 25-18, 25-21 win. Mia Gongas added eight kills and Sophia Dipaolo contributed 10 digs for Danvers (2-1).
For the Panthers, Reese Kwiatek had a great all-around match.
Masconomet 3, Peabody 0: Captain Megan Brady had a huge match with 15 kills to pace the Chieftains in an impressive NEC sweep, 25-19, 25-16, 25-15. Cate Wettstone added 11 kills of her own while Lidia Benedetto had a team-high four aces and shared the passing duties with Chloe Lodewick.
Ipswich 3, Newburyport 1: After dropping the first set, the Tigers rallied to win three straight and put the match away. Claire Buletza had 11 kills to lead the attack while Avery Brown had four blocks, Alex Marino handed out 29 assists with five aces and Emily Hannibal led the defense with 11 digs.
Bishop Fenwick 3, Bishop Stang 0: The Crusaders swept up their CCL rivals 27-25, 25-7, 25-18 behind a dozen aces by Ana Silveira, a dozen assists by Emme Lubas, a five block effort by Caitlin Boyle, 14 digs courtesy of Gwen Schroeder and another double-digit kill effort by Calli Symond (11).
Swampscott 3, Winthrop 1: Junior captain Reese Schaiberger had six aces and the Big Blue prevailed 25-12, 20-25, 25-13, 25-13. Fellow junior Lisa Paster led the offense with 13 kills.
Covenant Christian 3, Cambridge School of Weston 0: The Cougars earned a 25-11, 27-25, 25-20 victory.
BOYS SOCCER
St. John’s Prep 4, Catholic Memorial 3: Junior Mike Hutchinson’s first goal of the season, coming with 10 seconds left in regulation, gave the Eagles (2-0) a victory in West Roxbury. Senior Matt Foley finished with a goal and an assist, with senior Grant Magnuson and junior Ryan King also scoring.
Manchester Essex 1, Ipswich 0: Keeper Finn Wright made some key stops for the Tigers while center backs Michael Queen (a freshman) and Zane Norton excelled. Left back Jacoby Scarano also played a key role and Luke Souza and Ollie York stood out at midfield.
Lynnfield 3, Essex Tech 1: The Hawks went down in the stadium at home.
GIRLS SOCCER
Hamilton-Wenham 9, Rockport 0: Tessa Hunt had a hat trick while Georgia Wilson added a pair of goals to spark the Generals (2-0-1). Maren Cassidy, Margot Bryce Morris, Emma Hughes and Savannah Gauron had the other tallies for H-W, with Gauron adding three assists while Maddie Graber and Dusty Romiza had two apiece.
Manchester Essex 5, Ipswich 0: The Tigers (2-1) were knocked from the unbeaten ranks on the road.
Lynnfield 5, Essex Tech 0: Emma Huggins stood tall in net for the Hawks, finishing with 14 saves.
FIELD HOCKEY
Beverly 7, Saugus 0: Senior forward Ava Connon recorded two goals while netminder Charlotte Stevens earned her first varsity shutout without having to make a save for the Panthers (2-0) in their blowout win. Fiona Bazin, a sophomore, added a goal and assist for the winners, who got excellent all-around play from captain Elliot Lund (1 assist). Other goals were scored by Morgan Linskey, Lily Scotti, captain Mia Bazin, and Mary Kapnis, with Madeline LeBlanc earning an assist.
Peabody 0, Danvers 0: Sophia Kassis, a sophomore, made seven saves in net, including a clutch stop on a third period penalty stroke, as the Tanners (0-1-1) took their first point away from the Falcons in ages. Amelia DiBattista had a strong game for Peabody, which played with calmness and moved the ball up and down the field.
Senior goaltender Grace McLaughlin finished with 11 saves to earn the shutout for Danvers (0-3-1), with junior Alli McGinnity recording a defensive save.
Gloucester 5, Marblehead 0: Despite the best efforts of goalies Maggie Beauchesne and Elizabeth Hayes, the Magicians (1-1) couldn’t slow down Gloucester offensively.
Bishop Fenwick 8, Arlington Catholic 0: Freshman Sophie Cooke sparked the Fenwick (2-1) offense with two goals and two assists while goaltender Ginny Cahill needed to make just a single save to gather the shutout. Shea Mason, Ashley Stickney, and Olivia Watson each had one goal and one assist for the Crusaders, with Bella McCormack, Mia Millett, and Maya Haddock all scoring their first varsity goals.
GOLF
Hamilton-Wenham 196, Essex Tech 195: Grayson Minich had 37 points to lead the Generals to a razor thing victory. Cooper Miller added 35 and Reid Faldi chipped in with 34.
Ipswich 133, Rockport 120: Connor Wright and Samir Harb notched 28 points each and the Tigers improved to 3-2 with a road win. Louis Harrington added 24 points in the victory and James Norris played well with 20.
Gloucester 53.5, Swampscott 18.5: Tyler Ostroff and Nick Smyth each shot 39 for the Big Blue, who are right back at it on Wednesday against Beverly at Tedesco.
Danvers 171, Bishop Fenwick 130: Bryce Clark had 32 points to lead the Falcons in a non-league clash. Dylan Drislane added 26 points, Tommy Surette had 24, Thomas Fish and Josh Henry scored 23, Connor Harvey had 22 and Cole Andrews rounded out the victory with 21.
Marblehead 52.5, Peabody 19.5: The Tanners (1-3) played better at Tedesco Country Club than the final score showed.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
St. John’s Prep 19, Xaverian 44: The Eagles took five of the the top six spots on the 5K course in Westwood, with Daniel Padley taking first place (17:46). Follow him were teammates Liam Mahoney in third (17:54), Hunter Opal placing fourth (17:58), Leo Seltenrich claiming fifth place (18:08) and Jack McIntosh finishing sixth (18:10).
COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY
Salem State 4, Anna Maria 1: Two goals from Mikayla Talbot enabled the Vikings (1-2) to earn their first win of the season. Allison Thomas and Danvers native Grace Morey also scored for SSU, with goalie Izzy Mosley stopping 10 shots.
Endicott 4, MIT 1: Junior Tori Swanson had the game of her life, scoring all four goals as the Gulls (2-2) knocked off the nation’s 13th ranked team. Casey Halliday and Reagan Hicks both added an assist and goalie Alexis DiMattia was terrific, finishing with 14 saves.
Clark 7, Gordon 0: Allyson Stauffer finished with 14 saves in the Fighting Scots’ setback.
MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER
Gordon 1, Babson 1: With under four minutes to play, Gilbert Daru netted the game-tying goal to lift the Scots (1-3-1) to a road draw. Cole Levis assisted on the marker and keeper Carson Flake had a strong game with six saves.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Suffolk 3, Salem State 0: Presley Shairs had four kills on a tough offensive night for the Vikings, now 2-6. Gianna Mahoney’s six digs were a team-best.
