On the ropes on opening night, Greater Lawrence Tech certainly figured out how to set the tone for the season.
The Reggies were in deep trouble against Wakefield late, with the Warriors looking to score in the final seconds of a 22-22 tie.
A Wakefield sweep toss went awry, and there was Greater Lawrence’s Dylan Smith to scoop up the rock, race 93 yards to paydirt and emphatically stamp the Reggies as a force to be reckoned with in the dramatic, 29-22, win.
Gustavo Varela paced the Greater Lawrence Tech attack with 20 carries for 137 yards and a rushing TD. The junior also added a dynamic 90-yard kick return.
Zion Padilla (6 of 8, 108 yards) tossed a 27-yard TD pass to Johan Tamayo.

Anderson Pineda, Devin Cloyd and Billy Galvin each ran for a pair touchdowns, lifting Whittier to the opening-night win on the road.
Coach Kevin Bradley’s Wildcats chewed up 383 yards on the ground, carving up the Patriots to the tune of 7.4 yards a carry, and they did it via committee.
Pineda led the way with 91 on 15 tries, while Noah Allen (10-82), Cloyd (10-64), Galvin (5-70) and Jay Vazquez (6-58) all did some serious damage.
