PORT HENRY — Most small towns in the North Country concentrate on the celebration of a particular holiday, whether it is federal or local and for Moriah it is Labor Day.
In many ways it is fitting for Moriah to decide on Labor Day as the town was developed by the iron mining and smelting industries which brought immigrants from numerous countries to the area. The work was grueling, with long hours, strenuous labor and dangerous conditions deep into mine shafts.
Several activities were focused on or near Lake Champlain such as the Port Henry Regatta, Parade of Lights as well as fireworks over the water.
The Sherman Free Library had a book sale and basket raffle, while vendors sold hand-made items and farm produce.
The Labor Day Dash as well as the Kids Dash and Splash provided for fun physical activity. Entertainment was provided by the TinyusSmallus 90s Rock Band and illusionist Wyatt Hackett, as well as a car show.
Crowds lined the streets as a parade provided marching bands, numerous floats and lots of candy. John F. “Jack” Waldron had been selected as Grand Marshall.
Sadly, Waldron passed away a month earlier, but had been notified of the honor before his demise. Waldron was cited for having served for over 75 years in the Port Henry Volunteer Fire Department, during which time he had been Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Commissioner. In addition, Waldron served with Essex County Emergency Services and participated in numerous other volunteer activities.
