MOULTRIE — Since about 1979, Neighborhood Watch initiatives have been a constant throughout the years in Moultrie and Colquitt County. The Moultrie Police Department has spearheaded them sometimes and the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office has spearheaded them at other times.
The most recent initiative is being spearheaded by the Sheriff’s Office with the goal of launching Neighborhood Watch groups across the county. The first meeting will be held Sept. 5, at 6 p.m., at the Sheriff’s Office (the Criminal Justice Center) in the upstairs courtroom.
“We cannot achieve this without your involvement. This meeting is your opportunity to learn more about how you can contribute to this initiative and make a real difference in our community,” said Sheriff Rod Howell, who said it was a top priority for him.
A release on the sheriff offices’s Facebook page lists reasons why the sheriff’s office deems a Neighborhood Watch initiative to be crucial to the community:
Why This Matters
1. Strengthening Collaboration: Neighborhood Watch Groups foster a strong partnership between residents and law enforcement, creating a unified front against crime. When we work together, we create a safer environment for everyone.
2. Crime Prevention: An active and vigilant community is a powerful deterrent against criminal activity. By organizing these groups, we can keep our neighborhoods safer by preventing crime before it happens.
3. Increased Safety and Security: The presence of an engaged and observant community not only reduces crime but also increases the overall sense of safety and security. When we know our neighbors and stay informed, we can protect our homes, our families, and our way of life.
“Together, we can ensure that Colquitt County remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone. Join us, and let’s build a safer future together,” said Howell.
