Josh Rhodes and Chad Reynolds each had a rushing touchdown and 2-point conversion, Vinemont’s defense played stellar throughout the game and the Eagles held off Falkville 18-16 on Friday night to record a victory in their home and season opener.
Rhodes’ score helped Vinemont take an 8-6 lead into halftime. Reynolds, meanwhile, put the Eagles in front 16-6 with his touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Falkville housed the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to make it interesting down the stretch, but the home squad made enough plays to hold on for another close win in the series — the past five games have now been decided by a combined 29 points.
“It was a typical Falkville game, but I felt like our conditioning and practice habits paid off in the end,” Vinemont coach Stephen Robinson said. “We have got some mental mistakes to fix that put us in bad situations — left some points on the field and gave up some points because of that.
“But I am super happy with the fight and determination and the battling through all the adversity that comes with football in August. The defense got some stops and the offensive line took over the game.”
The Eagles travel to Southeastern next week.
