TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City St. Francis senior Grace Slocum is off to a white-hot start in the 2024 girls golf season.
Backing up individual titles at the Traverse City West Lady Titan Invitational last Friday and the annual Bob Lober Classic on Wednesday, the two-time Record-Eagle Girls Golfer of the Year collected her third victory in three meets as she took the crown and led the Gladiators to a home win at the St. Francis Lady Glads Invitational at Grandview Golf Clun in Kalkaska on Thursday.
Slocum fired an even-par 72, winning by 18 strokes over runner-up and Traverse City Central senior Rylee Ellison, who carded a 90. The Gladiators also won the team championship by a wide margin, combining for a 415 to be 25 strokes better than second-place Harbor Springs and TC Central.
Joining Slocum, who had four birdies and four bogeys in her round, on the champion Gladiators were Sydney Shacklette (108), Sydney Adams (112) and Laurel Walter (123). The rest of the field included Traverse City West in fourth with a 445, Charlevoix in fifth with a 461, Elk Rapids in sixth with a 463, East Jordan and Grayling both in eighth with a 485, Houghton Lake in 11th at 526, and Petoskey in 12th with a 528.
The remainder of the top-10 individuals were Cheboygan’s Elise Markham in third with a 96, Elk Rapids’ Laci Springborn in fourth with a 99, Charlevoix’s Avery Kita and TC Central’s Susie Hebert tied for fifth with a 100, Traverse City West’s Damien Gagnon and Leland’s Elyse Atha tied for seventh with a 101, Harbor Springs Katey Buchanan in ninth with a 104, and Grayling’s Jessica Campbell and East Jordan’s Olivia Maher tied for 10th with a 105.

Glads take 3rd at Sturgis Great 8
STURGIS — Reigning Record-Eagle Boys Tennis Player of the Year Owen Jackson won the one-singles championship at the Sturgis Great 8 on Thursday as his Traverse City St. Francis Gladiators finished in third place to runner-up Ann Arbor Greenhills and champion Cranbrook Kingswood.
The Glads collected 37 points to Greenhills’ 56 and Cranbrook’s 58.
Jackson went 3-0 at one-singles. Max King and David Ansley at one-doubles as well as Brady Thelen and Caset Jackson at three-doubles both went 2-1 in their flights.
Going 1-2 on the day were Eli Schmude at two-singles, Carson Poole at three-singles, Luke Davis at four-singles, William Gibbons and Willard Sutton at two-doubles, and Tristan Durkin and Joel LaDuke at four doubles.
