It is that time of year again: fairs, football and the unofficial end to summer.
Students are back in school, the fair is in full swing, high school football starts this evening, and Labor Day is just days away.
My favorite parts of the fair (not necessarily in order) are the people, the corn dogs, the cotton candy and the freshly squeezed lemonade.
I do not ride the rides. I do not ride them with my friends. I do not ride them with family. I do not ride them at all. I have struggled all my life with motion sickness. I can even make myself sick when I am driving!
“Have You Herd?” It is the final weekend of the Cumberland County Fair. The annual event wraps up Saturday night. Sunday is designated as the day to pick up your fair entries.
Events scheduled at the fairgrounds today, Aug. 23, include a 5 p.m. carnival opening; live demonstrations from 6-8 p.m; a junior goat show at 6 and the Cumberland County Fair Horse Show at 7 p.m.
Saturday is a 9 a.m. chick chain show and sell; a 3 p.m. midway opening; a 4 p.m. mule show; open beef show at 5; and live demonstrations from 6-8 p.m.
All exhibit buildings featuring Cumberland Countians’ entries in various categories are open daily.
Sunday, Aug. 25, is the exhibit building opening for removal of all fair entries. Items may be picked up between 1-3 p.m.
Shout out to Cumberland County’s new Fairest of the Fair. County High School Cheerleader Whitley Atkinson captured the crown during pageant festivities at Stone Memorial High School.
She is the daughter of Jamie and Tiffany Atkinson. Whitley will represent our county in the state fair pageant in January.
High school football kicks off today with both of Cumberland County’s high school teams playing at home.
The Cumberland County High School Jets will host the Scott County Highlanders at Jet Stadium. Noah Repasky coaches the Jets. You can listen to all the action on 102.5 with Steve Randel and Will Foster beginning at 7 p.m.
The Stone Memorial Panthers will host the Cookeville Cavaliers at Panther Stadium. Kick off is also at 7 p.m. Derik Samber coaches the Panthers. You can listen to the live play by play action on 99.3 with Vince Brown and Shane Wyatt providing play-by-play and color broadcasting of the game.
The Jets and Panthers will face each other on Friday, Sept. 6. That game will be held at Cumberland County High School.
Labor Day is just a little over a week away. The holiday will begin next Friday and end on Monday evening, Sept. 2. Record amounts of activities are expected on the roads, in the skies, and on the water next weekend. Please remember to exercise caution whether you are driving, flying, or boating.
A free class on making your own pizza crust will be offered tomorrow, Saturday, Aug 24, from 9 a.m.-noon at the Good Samaritans Community Hall on 281 10th St.
Space is limited for this installment of the Next Generation Homemakers. Please call or message Peggy Duncan at 931-287-3845 to sign up.
