When Nicolas J. Boileau was sworn in as the new Fifth District Circuit Court Judge in July, replacing retiring Judge Derek Girton, it was a natural succession. After all, Boileau joined Acton and Snyder Law Firm in July 2012, taking over for Girton upon his appointment as a Vermilion County judge.
“When I joined (the firm) I actually took Judge Girton’s office,” Boileau said.
Boileau is seated to hear family law cases in Vermilion County. He oversees hearings involving custody disputes, child support, divorces, and orders of protection, among others.
“It’s a learning curve everyday,” Boileau said. “I am really enjoying the job and getting to work with good lawyers every day.”
He says his previous position working in civil law has prepared him for his place on the bench.
“A lot of civil law has the same principles that apply to family law,” he said. “The public is a consumer of the judicial system, it serves them as they seek relief and ultimately justice.
“Everyday I get to work with great and talented lawyers and together we play a role in providing justice and relief sought by the parties. It’s not a bad job to have.”
