MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Hampshire opened the high school golf season with a team victory at Valley View Golf Course on Tuesday.
Moorefield hosted Hampshire along with Frankfort, Keyser and Petersburg.
The Trojans won with a team score of 162, winning by 17 strokes.
“I thought overall for the first meet of the year, we played pretty well,” Hampshire head coach Chad VanMeter said. “Guys strung a lot of pars together.”
Moorefield finished second at 179 on its home course while Keyser took third with a 183.
The Falcons and Vikings tied for fourth with scores of 188.
Bryson Morehead of Frankfort was the low medalist with a 37.
Peyton VanMeter from Hampshire finished second with a 38, followed by his teammate Brayden Hott who shot a 39 for third place.
“Peyton’s worked hard this offseason, played a lot of golf over the summer,” coach VanMeter said. “He played well out there today. I think he ended up with eight pars and a double bogey for two over. Brayden’s just been solid for us all season, hopefully he continues to do what he did today.”
Ayden Gossard finished fourth overall for the Vikings, carding a 41.
Parker Charlton from the Trojans tied the Golden Tornado’s Ryan Pratt for fifth place, each shooting 42s.
“He was disappointed, which as a coach is a good thing,” Keyser head coach Josh Blowe said. “The first match you play as a sophomore and you shoot 42 and you’re disappointed. That’s the kind of player he’s gonna be for us this year.”
Trenton Timbrook and Landin Ludwick each carded 43s for Hampshire while Cyrus Chaney shot a 46.
For the Yellow Jackets, Drake Kimble and Trevor Baldwin each carded 43s.
Austin Arbaugh shot a 46 while Veronica Carr had a 47.
Kail Greenwalt shot a 53 and Marcus Creman 56.
Keyser’s Monk Garland shot a 45 while Lucas Davy carded 47.
Ian Smith shot a 49, Caleb Blacka 50 and Brayden Blowe shot a 51.
“I thought we were not our best today, but day one you don’t want to be your best anyway,” Blowe said. “I’m hoping this is the outlier where we’re counting 47s, 49s. That’s not where we wanna be this year. But for a first match, we had eight players and six of them this is their first match.”
Landon Catlett shot a 47 for the Falcons followed by Gavin Corwell’s 51, Brennan Wharton’s 53 and Liam Hunt’s 69.
Maverick Wratchford shot a 43 for Petersburg while Wyatt Alt and Carter Hardy each had 52s.
Josh Lahman shot a 57 while Caden Ours had a 62.
The five schools along with Fairmont Senior play an 18-hole match at Keyser’s Polish Pines on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
