FROSTBURG — Mountain Ridge High School and the Community Trust Foundation announced Will Patterson as the annual Enordo “Moose” Arnone scholarship award winner for 2024.
The award memorializes Arnone who died in 2015 and honors his lifetime commitment to education and to his faith in the youth of the community.
As an honor student at Beall High, Arnone was Student Government president, chaired the Allegany County Student Council and played soccer, basketball and baseball.
During his high school career, the lefthander set a high school pitching record of 35-2. After high school, Arnone played baseball in the St. Louis/Baltimore organization.
Arnone is believed by the Times-News to own the single-game area strikeout record. He struck out 27 batters in a 12-inning game against Bruce on June 4, 1952. Beall won 4-3.
Professionally, he became a teacher, coach and administrator in the Allegany County school system and also served 16 years on the elected Board of Education.
The athletic building at the stadium is named for the Arnones who raised much of the money for the $3.5 million complex.
The winning applicant for 2023, Patterson, will receive an annual stipend of $1,250, renewable for each of his four years of college. The annual awardee must play a sport at a four-year institution but must not have been granted a full scholarship.
Will plans to play football while at Shepherd University.
