CHATSWORTH — Six runs scored across the third and fourth innings helped Northwest Whitfield pile up a big lead, and the Lady Bruins downed North Murray 10-1 Monday night.
Northwest (1-2) led 1-0 headed into the third. The Lady Bruins plated a pair of runs in the third, then piled up four in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-0.
North Murray (0-1) answered with its lone run of the game in the fifth inning, a Jazmyn Wright RBI single that plated Jayden Watson, but Northwest added another three runs in the sixth and the game was called there, with the Lady Bruins downing the Lady Mountaineers in the latter’s season opener.
While the Lady Bruin hitters piled up runs, Northwest pitcher Jolie Albertson held North Murray to four total hits and had 13 strikeouts in the six-inning game.
Northwest’s Lindsey Harris hit an RBI single in the first inning to score Maggie Brooker. In the third inning, after a hard-hit single down the third base line from Albertson advanced Harris to third, a Libby Lee single brought home a pair of runs.
After an Brooker single scored another two in the third, a triple by Harris brought home Brooker. A Lee RBI made it 7-0 after four.
After the lone North Murray run, Lee, Paisley Chandler and McKenna Mitchell each plated runs for Northwest in the sixth.
Harris finished 3-for-4 with the triple and two total RBIs for Northwest, while Lee had four RBIs. Brooker had two, and Chandler had one. Brylee Farmer had a double while going 2-for-4.
Northwest got its first win of the early season after starting 0-2 in two games played Saturday. Northwest had fallen 5-1 to East Forsyth and 4-3 to Sonoraville on Saturday.
North Murray, after dropping its season opener against the Lady Bruins, gets another chance against Northwest Tuesday night.
The two teams meet up again Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in a home game for Northwest Whitfield.

Murray County 8, Gilmer 0
Murray County (1-1) shut out Gilmer (1-1) 8-0 on Saturday in a game that ended after five innings.
Emerie Bohannon pitched the shutout by allowing just three hits and striking out eight.
Blakelee Ledford went 3-for-3 with a double and a trio of RBIs. Lanie Spence doubled and had two RBIs. Charlsey Richards and Brayleigh Amos each had an RBI.
Murray plays at Dade County Tuesday night at 5:30.
Adairsville 5, Southeast Whitfield 3
Southeast Whitfield (0-1) dropped its season opener 5-3 against Adairsville (1-0) on Thursday.
Southeast and Adairsville were tied at 3 headed into the sixth, but a pair of Adairsville runs made the difference.
Rylee Shuler went 3-for-4 for Southeast, and Destiney Kenemore and Michaela Pendley each had two hits. Pendley had an RBI. Allie Azurdia and Chyann Blevins both doubled and brought in a run.
Blevins pitched all seven innings for Southeast and struck out four.
Southeast plays at Cedartown Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Gilmer 6, Dalton 2
Gilmer (1-1) pulled away from Dalton (0-1) in extra innings to knock off the Lady Catamounts 6-2 Friday in Dalton’s season opener.
After Gilmer scored two runs in the top of the second inning to open the scoring, Dalton plated a run apiece in the third and fourth to tie the game.
Neither team scored again until the game went into extras tied at 2. Gilmer turned in four runs in the top of the ninth, and Dalton couldn’t answer.
Halo Thomas went 2-for-3 for Dalton in a game in which the Lady Cats tallied five hits. Nayeli Olvera and Zoey Martinez had an RBI apiece. Claire Miller had a double.
Dalton’s Kaylee Tatum pitched into the ninth inning, striking out 11 in the game, allowing just three hits in the first eight innings of competition.
Dalton hosts Cartersville Tuesday night at 5:30.
