THOMASVILLE — Thomas County is in the projected path of a tropical system expected to develop south of Florida this weekend.
“Potential Tropical Cyclone Four,” which the National Weather Service and Weather Channel predict could turn into Tropical Storm Debby, currently has no watches or warnings for Georgia. Florida has watches and warnings stretching from Miami to Tampa.
The National Weather Service gave this system an 80% chance of developing.
Should it develop, the projected path of this system sees it stay on the west side of Florida, then make a turn northeast at the Big Bend, near Tallahassee.
After the turn, the system is predicted to go through southern and southeastern Georgia Sunday night and Monday morning. Wind speeds could reach 40-50 miles per hour with rainfall possible of 2-3 inches. Some areas of Florida may see 4-12 inches of rain.
Thomas County Emergency Services posted on Facebook Friday afternoon that sandbags are available at several locations: Hansell Road, Stewart Road, Woodruf Farm/Sunset, Highway 188 at 202, Highway 84 in Boston, Dillon Road and Highway 19 at Riverwood and Patten.
There is a 10-bag limit per family.
