Permit to carry age restriction still in place
MANKATO — The Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office is requesting patience from people younger than age 21 who want to obtain a permit to carry a firearm while an appeals process plays out in courts.
A release from the agency states multiple people have applied for permits since July 16, when an appellate court upheld a previous federal court decision that found Minnesota’s 21-plus age restriction on firearm carry permits violates Second Amendment rights.
With the appeals process not yet finished, however, the restriction apparently remains in place.
“Legal guidance at the local and state level has confirmed that an appeal is active, and the opinion did nothing to modify the Federal District Court’s stay,” the sheriff’s office stated in a release. “Therefore, the age restriction is still in effect.”
