THOMASVILLE — The Cairo High School gym was packed in the early hours of Saturday morning as families came out to get school supplies for their children. The Grady County School District partnered with Family Connection to provide school supplies, clothes and book bags to Grady County students.
“It’s to help supply some of the basic, essential supplies so parents, care givers do not have to worry about that. That kind of helps to offset some of their costs,” said Director of Grady County Family Connections Teresa Sigler.
Sigler spoke on how having school supplies can really benefit students and give them confidence on their first day of school.
“If you don’t have a pencil somebody might start to bully that child because they don’t have a book bag. So, when children come to school on the first day of school they’ve got their brand new book bag, they’ve got their basic needs,” Sigler said. “This is our future, this is our next generation and if we pull together like we have pulled together today, and that’s what Grady County is good at. We can pull together in a time of need and especially when it comes to children, from the youngest to the oldest, we make it happen.”
There were many different vendors at the Back to School Blitz including Georgia Enroll, a Georgia legal services program, the T and S Foundation, the Vashti Center for Children and Families, First Option Care and many others. The Cairo police and fire departments were also in attendance.
Thanks to the work of Grady County Family Connections, the Grady County School District and the Grady County community, students around Grady County will be able to start their school year off on the right foot and with the right supplies.
