TIFTON — The cars arrived early Saturday at the Mims Kids Stay in School Rally at the 41 South Farmer’s Market. The event was to have started at noon, but when the people came early, M. Jay Hall and volunteers were ready for them.
“We’re really, really blessed to have a great community of volunteers and people who want to help sponsor and see this through,” said Hall. This was the 13th year Mims Kids has given away school supplies.
The number of those assisting, always plentiful, was given an even bigger boost this year from members of Tift County High’s Class of 1980. Youth from a summer gardening camp were there to serve as well.
“We’re thankful for all the help,” Hall said, which also included Peanut Butter & Jesus and members of the housing authority.
“A community effort all the way around,” Hall said. “That’s what it’s all about. Bringing people together from all different backgrounds.”
Supplies in the Mims Kids bags covered all the staples and then some. Hall said kids received paper, pencils, crayons, rulers and highlighters. and if they do not already have a backpack, the supply bag is big enough to be one.
Though not part of the bags, there were clothes donations for those in need.
Hall said he could only imagine how many had been served over 13 years. “We usually serve about 200 each year,” he said.
Mims Kids has plenty planned for the remainder of 2024 with giveaways coming for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
