BOWLING GREEN — Firefighters rescued one person from a McMullen Highway home early Saturday after fire broke out in a kitchen, the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal said.
First-arriving Bowling Green units reported smoke coming from the the property located at 12100 McMullen Highway.
Firefighters were dispatched by Allegany County 911 Communications Center at 4:45 a.m. and brought the fire under control in about 10 minutes.
The fire marshal’s office said a passing motorist observed fire coming from the structure’s exterior wall and called 911. The passerby forced entry into the residence to locate any occupants, but was forced out by heavy smoke conditions, investigators said.
Firefighters found a sleeping occupant in an upstairs bedroom, who was subsequently transported to UPMC Western Maryland by an Allegany County Department of Emergency Services ambulance with non-life threatening injuries, the fire marshal’s office said.
The fire caused about $30,000 damage to the structure, which was owned by Judy Lee Flippone, investigators said.
Crews from Allegany, Mineral and Garrett counties responded to the scene along with Potomac Edison and Columbia Gas.
The fire remains investigation by the fire marshal’s office.
U.S. Route 220 was closed during the firefighting operation. Maryland State Police assisted with traffic control.
