CAIRO – The work never stops for the Cairo Syrupmakers golf team.
Head coach Sam Holland rewarded his group of players with a trip in late June to play a round of golf at the Robert Trent Jones course Highland Oaks in Dothan, Alabama. The team consisted of Camden Renfroe, Griffin Hurst, Finley Walker, Levi Duke, Ryan Pearce, and Alex Lopez.
It provided the team an opportunity to play a prestigious course.
“The offseason work this summer before we went to dead week, I called over there and got us set up to play. I talked to the pro, and he just allowed us to bring the guys over and play. It was nothing more than a reward,” said Holland. “They had the course set up for the Young Masters, so we got to play it in tip-top shape. We got to find out what being humbled by golf really means.”
It was part of a plan by Holland this summer to expose his players to more courses, different layouts and challenging holes, like the 705-yard, par 5 No. 6 hole at the Marshwood section of Highland Oaks Country Club.
“It was just an opportunity that we’re trying to get the guys working year-round and get the program going. It’s something where we’ve played a couple of other courses this summer,” Holland said. “It’s just a good little reward for the guys, get them to play other courses and learn how to play and not just play the same course over and over.
“We’ve got a good group of young men, younger guys coming back, so we’re building some things. I’m just excited to see them fall in love with the game and the passion they have in trying to get better now.”
