They’ve played 21 matches this spring. They’ve come away with 21 straight victories.
Now, just one more match stands between the St. John’s Prep tennis team and the program’s fifth state championship under head coach Mark Metropolis.
The top seeded Eagles won all three singles matches handily in straight sets to topple Lexington, 4-1, Monday in the Division 1 state semifinals on the tennis courts at Newton North High School.
Now 21-0 on the season, the Eagles will play for the Division 1 state title — likely Saturday at MIT — against the winner of Tuesday’s other semifinal featuring second seeded Concord-Carlisle and No. 6 Brookline. St. John’s Prep defeated C-C, 3-2, in their second match of the season.
In Monday’s semifinal triumph, sophomore John DeAngelis wasted little time in claiming a 6-0, 6-0 victory at first singles to get the Eagles off and rolling.
Junior Jack Prokopis followed soon thereafter at second singles with a win of his own, claiming a 6-2, 6-0 triumph. Fellow junior Luke Free battled to a 7-5 first set win at third singles before completing the singles sweep with a 6-0 decision.
The other point came from St. John’s Prep’s first doubles team as junior Luke Prokopis and sophomore Boris Kouzmanov claimed a three-set win, rallying to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
St. John’s Prep has won state championships under Metropolis’s watch in 1994, 1995, 2000 and 2001.
