VALDOSTA — At least it’s a dry heat.
Forecasters expect South Georgia’s high temperatures to go up a few degrees with humidity dropping over the weekend.
The cause is an upper-level disturbance over the Mississippi Valley, said Israel Gonzales, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office.
The disturbance was expected to move east over the Alabama/Georgia border Thursday night, he said, reaching Valdosta in the evening Friday.
There could be “small” and scattered storms with locally heavy rain, gusty winds and even small hail, he said.
Saturday and Sunday will see dry air following the disturbance into South Georgia, Gonzales said.
The weekend will be “generally dry,” said Tom Kines, senior meteorologist with the private forecasting firm AccuWeather.
The average high temperature for Valdosta for this time of year is usually around 90 degrees, he said. Weather service forecasts show the city’s highs this weekend running from 93-95 degrees.
Early next week, rain chances will build as another disturbance moves through, both forecasters said. Rain chances at that time could reach 50%. Humidity levels will also climb, Kines said.
He said the potential for heavy rain outweighed the chances for gusty high-wind events.
