MOULTRIE – History was made Thursday, when former President of the US and current candidate for President, Donald Trump, was convicted of 34 felonies for falsifying business records. Local residents weighed-in today, almost all of them supporting Trump.
Colquitt County GOP Chairman Dennis Futch said, “It was a sham trial. It will never stand-up on appeal. The intent was election interference.”
He also said that he believed that it was fundamental that the government prosecute whenever it’s necessary to do so but this was not the case in the trial of Trump.
“It must be righted or people are going to lose faith in our justice system,” he said.
He also urged residents of Colquitt County to put differences aside and vote to do what’s right for the country.
“The RNC and Colquitt County will firmly stand behind President Trump,” Futch said.
On the other side of the aisle, Shirley Hampton, the chairman of the Colquitt County Democratic Party, said, “I feel that the jury did their job. The verdict he received was justified.”
She said that she believed that it was a sad day for America because it has a former president who won’t admit that he’s wrong. She said that it didn’t matter who it was that was on trial for the charges, if it had been Obama, Clinton or Bush, he was wrong.
“This country needs to get back some respect. People are laughing at us now,” she said.
She also urged people to come together and do what was right, regardless of what side they were on.
“No one is above the law. It’s time to just move on. Maybe this is a wake-up call for both parties,” Hampton said.
When Colquitt County resident Shanna Cooper was asked if the news would change the way she was going to vote, she said, “I wouldn’t change it.”
She added that she stood more with the Republican Party because the represented what she believed in.
In answer to The Observer’s Facebook post asking the same question, Darrell King commented, “No, only makes me support him more!”
“Nope, still voting for Trump. The only difference is they won’t convict Biden (and his puppet masters) for all he has done and is doing to our country. At least Trump is out for the American people,” commented Ellie Lewis.
“I’m going to vote for Trump no matter what,” commented Mandy West.
“Biden-Harris 2024 (Never been convicted of a crime),” commented James Sizemore.
Out of 20 comments on The Observer’s post, only two seemed not to be voting for Trump in November’s election. A few of the comments were the same meme, which stated, “I am more MAGA now than ever.”
