ROCKPORT — Special Town Meeting on Monday took about 5 hours to consider whether to support measures to comply with the state’s MBTA housing district mandate.
Voters approved the two articles on the warrant:
The multi-item Article A that amends the town’s zoning bylaws and the Transit-Oriented Village Overlay District (TOVOD).
Article B which creates a multi-family MBTA district near the MBTA train station off Railroad Avenue by amending town zoning bylaws.
The start of the meeting, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at Rockport Middle and High School, was delayed by Town Moderator Brian Sullivan.
He predicted at 5:45 p.m. that there 300 people in the Rockport High School gymnasium, while another 300 were outside trying to get in.
Sullivan adjourned the meeting at 11 p.m.
Because Special Town Meeting favored both housing measures, the potential for construction of multi-family housing in the overlay district exists.
