No one was injured in an early-morning fire that occurred in an air conditioning unit at a Back Shore hotel, according to Gloucester fire Chief Eric Smith.
Smith said the Fire Department made quick work of the situation.
Emergency crews received a call for a working fire at 1:34 a.m. Tuesday, at the Atlantis Oceanfront Inn,125 Atlantic Road.
Smith said a passerby saw the fire at the oceanside hotel, which is closed during the off-season, and called it in.
When firefighters arrived, they determined the fire was coming from an air conditioning unit at the corner of the building. The Facebook site, Northeast Massachusetts Emergency Alerts, described the fire as being “in an HVAC unit on the exterior extended into a room on Floor 2.”
Crews quickly extinguished the fire and contained the damage to one room.
“The guys got there and kept it contained,” Smith told the Times. The hotel, which Smith said is made of concrete and city records show has a stucco on masonry exterior, helped keep the fire contained to the one room.
Crews cleared the scene within 90 minutes.
“Our firefighters responded quickly, and their swift response limited damage to a small, confined area,” Smith said in a prepared statement. Beauport EMS was at the scene. The Rockport Fire Department provided station coverage.
