DANVILLE — The East Main Street and Bowman Avenue intersection in Danville is losing another drug store.
Walgreens is set to close on April 8 at 842 E. Main St.
The company last year announced it was to close about 150 Walgreens U.S. locations by August 2024 to cut costs.
Danville also has a Walgreens at 400 W. Fairchild St.
According to Jennifer Cotto, with the external communications team at Walgreens, “When faced with the difficult decision to close a location, several factors are taken into account, including our existing footprint of stores, dynamics of the local market, and changes in the buying habits of our patients and customers, among other reasons. This location’s closure is due to unsustainable business performance.”
“Our priority is to ensure a smooth transition for our customers and team members during this time. The last day the store will be in operation is April 8. All team members have been retained and have been offered positions in other Walgreens locations,” the statement continued.
For customers, patients don’t need to take action as Walgreens will automatically transfer prescriptions to the Walgreens located at 400 W. Fairchild Ave. Walgreens communicates these details to customers via mail/email in advance of a location closure.
Walgreens will be offering free 1-to-2-day prescription delivery for up to 90 days when the location closes.
According to Walgreens Boots Alliance, Walgreens is an integrated healthcare, pharmacy and retailer serving millions of customers and patients, with a 170-year history and about 12,500 locations across the U.S., Europe and Latin America.
The company is reimagining local healthcare and well-being as part of its purpose – to create more joyful lives through better health. It employs approximately 330,000 people.
CVS at 900 E. Main St. in Danville, across the street from Walgreens, closed in Jan. 2020. It had opened in early 2010.
The East Main Street and Bowman Avenue intersection brings development opportunities, local officials say.
According to Vermilion Advantage’s Mike Marron, “There are always challenges and we don’t want to hear any bad news about any other businesses closing, however, you do have some strong building blocks on that intersection. McDonald’s is a strong anchor for the area and just a few feet down the street you have the newly renovated Burger King. That is a strong foundation to bring opportunity to the intersection in the future.”
Danville Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. added, “I am saddened to see Walgreens closed. That had been our family pharmacy from the time it opened until recently. With both it and the CVS being in prime locations (at that intersection), it’s my hope that we will eventually be able to find the perfect use for them. Challenges are the age of the Walgreens building and for CVS, the existing long-term lease.”
