NEWFANE — The Town of Newfane’s bicentennial kick-off dinner was held March 23 at the Olcott fire hall.
The sold-out event — 200 guests — was sponsored in part by the Olcott Beach Community Association. The kickoff featured dinner catered by Calhoon’s Pub, bicentennial-themed cookies from the Cookie Cottage in Wilson, a bicentennial cake donated by Valentines on the Lake (Olcott), and music by M-Sound.
In commemoration of Newfane’s bicentennial, U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney, NY-24, gave the town a flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol, and the text of a legislative resolution that was read into the record of the New York State Senate and New York State Assembly was presented by state Sen. Rob Ortt and state Assembly member Mike Norris. Niagara County Legislator Shawn Foti presented the town with a proclamation declaring March 23, 2024, as Town of Newfane Bicentennial Celebration Day.
Also during the kick-off dinner, Town Historian Bill Clark presented a slide show of the history of Newfane and its hamlets.
The town’s bicentennial celebration will continue throughout the year with occasional special events. Next up is the opening of the town’s time capsule, slated for May 19 during the Town of Newfane Historical Society’s annual Apple Blossom Festival at Country Village museum, West Creek Road.
