Earlier this month, Debra Pourquoi, athletic director of The Dalton Academy, was recognized as the 7-A Division 1 Athletic Director of the Year by the Georgia Athletic Directors Association conference.
That doesn’t surprise anyone who knows her or works with her, according to Kendra Pannell, director of communications for Dalton Public Schools.
Pourquoi “epitomizes the essence of exemplary citizenship,” Pannell said. “Her pioneering spirit and dedication have left an indelible mark on the Dalton community.”
“Breaking barriers and shattering glass ceilings, Debra made history by becoming the first Black female head coach in Dalton Public Schools’ history for both girls basketball and track,” Pannell said. “Her appointment as the athletic director of The Dalton Academy further solidifies her trailblazing legacy, inspiring generations to come.”
“Debra’s commitment to fostering diversity and equality extends beyond the school walls, as evidenced by her active involvement with the local Dalton-Whitfield NAACP chapter,” said Pannell.
In recognition of her contributions to education, athletics and community service, the Dalton Daily Citizen names Debra Pourquoi Citizen of the Week.
