PLATTSBURGH — Saranac scored four goals within a 2:44 span midway through the second period on Wednesday night and skated to a 6-2 victory over Northeastern Clinton in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference hockey.
It was senior night for the state-ranked Spartans (10-7-1, 5-2), who honored their two seniors — forward Landen Duprey and goaltender Mason Patnode. Duprey accounted for two goals and an assist, while Patnode turned aside 17 of 19 shots to get the win in net.
“I want to thank Landen and Mason for their contributions to our hockey program in their careers,” Saranac coach Robby Knowles said.
“I give full marks to NCCS for their effort tonight. They had us on the ropes for over half the game. Owen Ebersol, in particular, does a really good job for them.”
Duprey put the Spartans ahead just 52 seconds into the game. The Cougars then rallied to take a 2-1 lead after one on goals by Ebersol at 3:30 and Winnie Simpson at 11:18.
Saranac, however, erupted in the second when Duprey scored at 8:10, Jackson Coryer at 8:54, Nolan Miner at 9:25 and Ashtyn Catlin at 10:54 to give Saranac a 5-2 lead.
Catlin then scored his second goal of the game at the 14:38 mark to put the Spartans up 6-2 after two. That would be the end of the scoring for the contest.
Catlin finished with two goals and two assists, Duprey two goals and an assist, and Landon Giroux two assists.
“Other than the back half of the second period, we really didn’t play good hockey,” Knowles said. “It’s a good thing we were able to score in bunches in the second period because the rest of the game we weren’t sharp.
“Overall, we need to do a better job staying out of the penalty box. We took a couple really bad penalties and we can’t have guys doing that. On a positive note, I thought our penalty kill was excellent.”
