GIRLS BASKETBALL
Bishop Fenwick 56, Walpole 45: Tournament Most Valuable Player Cecilia Kay grabbed 17 rebounds and the Crusaders (5-1) were excellent both defending and on the glass to win the Rivard Tournament at Oliva Ames. Kay scored 22 points while sophomore Celia Neilson was All-Tournament and scored 11 with five assists and four steals. Senior Isabella Lopez-Marin also played a key role with 11 points and five thefts.
Beverly 38, Melrose 28: Senior captain Lauren Caley was named North Reading Holiday Tournament MVP for another great performance on the glass and the Panthers (4-2) won their fourth straight to take the tourney title. Freshman Jules Stevenson, who was All-Tourney, led Beverly with 10 points plus three steals and three assists. Anna Michaud scored eight with six boards and Molly Potter scored five with nine rebounds and two assists.
Manchester Essex 36, Swampscott 26: Senior Victoria Quagrello led the Big Blue with 10 points and seven boards and sophomore Sam Ward scored nine point of her own.
North Reading 66, Danvers 24: Kayda Brown played well in her return with five points and Angie Djoko and Reese Holland had four each but the Falcons (1-3) dropped their third straight. Aundrea Gaudino and Lilly Mastrangelo played well for DHS.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Masconomet 3, Wakefield 2: Bella Flinn, Madie Dupuis and Ella Meehan handled the scoring the Chieftains went into the New Year at 4-1 thanks to a solid road performance. Senior captain MacKenzie Cronin made 22 stops in net while junior captain Maddie Kenny and Tara Thompson handed out assists.
BOYS HOCKEY
Danvers 2, Lowell Catholic 2 (OT): Down by two entering the third period, the Falcons (2-2-2) rallied with a pair of tallies, including the game-tying snipe by captain Mike DeLiisio with 13 seconds to play in the Chelmsford Lions Cup Tournament consolation game. Liam Brooks assisted on the goal, with captain Ty Langlais also scoring for Danvers. Goaltender Braedyn Oteri had 22 saves in 50 minutes for the Blue-and-White.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Peabody 67, Triton 40: Raph Laurent scored 23 points with five steals, five rebounds and four assists to power the once-beaten Tanners in a bounce back win. Senior A.J. Forte added 14 points with five swipes, Jariel Tolentino contributed ten with four steals and three assists and senior Johnny Lucas scored five. Cam Connolly and Jimmy Festa also played well for the winners.
Salem 67, Wakefield 54: Jordan Maxson finished with a game-high 31 points, including four 3-pointers, and added four steals to give the Witches (now 2-0) a road victory. Elian Rodriguez also had a strong game for the winners with 20 points and a team-high five assists, while Eddie Butler added six points and Rocco Ryan grabbed a dozen rebounds for Salem.
Stoneham 60, Hamilton-Wenham 53: Down by a point at halftime, the Generals were unable to gain any traction over the final two quarters in a home setback.
WRESTLING
Beverly win three: Tristan Gold had three pins at 144 pounds to help the Panthers defeat Reading (54-15), Tewksbury (39-37) and Tyngsborough/Dracut (52-15). Jayden Santos (150) also won three matches while Braden McNeil (190) and Joe Baker (165) picked up two pins each. Jackson Skaza also earned his first varsity win with a pin at 138.
BOYS TRACK
Beverly wins meet: The Panthers had 98 points to win the Northeastern Conference freshman/sophomore meet held at Gloucester High with Peabody (71) in second followed by Marblehead (54) and Masconomet (47).
Event champions from the meet were: From Beverly, in the 600, Harrison Standon (1:35), Charlie Bossler in the 1000 (2:50), Jason Provost in the 2-mile (10:20) and Charlie Salerno in the long jump (20-3).
From Masconomet, in the 300, Nice Ceffalo (40.50) and Colin Morin in the hurdles (9.05). From Marblehead, William Cruikshank in the mile (5:05). From Peabody, Iago Pacheco in the high jump (5-4). From Swampscott, Benjamin White in the shot put (36-10).
The relay winners were Beverly in the 4×200 (1:43) and Peabody in the 4×400 (4:02).
St. John’s Prep 83, Malden Catholic 3: The Eagles cruised to 4-0 with another Catholic Conference dual meet win. Event winners were Kiernan Brown (hurdles, 8.73), Brendan Burke (dash, 6.78), Charles Angell (300, 37.11), Dan Padley (600, 1:26), Mateo DeOrio (1000, 2:46), Colton Hayhurst (mile, 4:46), Tireni Asenuga (long jump, 20-11), Geo Moretti (high jump, 5-10) and Gael Garcia (shot put, 42-7).
GIRLS TRACK
Masconomet takes cake: The Chieftains took home the title at the Northeastern Conference freshmen/sophomore meet with 76 points. Masconomet narrowly edged out Beverly (70) and Peabody (67).
Gold medalists in the various events were: From Masconomet, Savannah Stevens in the 1000 (3:32); From Marblehead, Sadie Halpern in the dash (7.62) and Lillian Reddy in the shot put (30-9); From Danvers, Sabina Sturgeon in the 300 (46.32); From Beverly, Grace Williams in the 600 (1:45), Chloe Bossler in the mile (6:00); From Peabody, Kayley Bunn in the hurdles (10.41) and from Swampscott, Theia Giantis in the 2-mile (10:36).
Marblehead won the 4×200 relay and Beverly won the 4×400.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 67, Principia 45: At the Sunshine Shootout in Daytona Beach, the Gulls (4-5) handled their opponents by getting out to a 20-10 start. Katelyn Konarski had the hot hand with 21 points plus five rebounds and Sarah Dempsey was also in double figures with 14. Emma Shinney ran the floor well with 11 assists and three steals.
Wheaton 58, Gordon 49: The Scots (1-9) managed just six points in the fourth quarter as Wheaton pulled away late. Ami Rivera led Gordon with 11 points while Sydney Noyes scored eight with a team-best nine rebounds.
Salem State 76, Pitt-Bradford 60: SUNYAC Coaches vs. Cancer All-Tournament selection Abuk Teng scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Vikings to a split in their trip to the Empire State. Ernidia Goncalves had a monster game as well with 29 points and 21 rebounds and Kylie Gates handed out four assists.
