OAKLAND — After a competitive first quarter, Wheeling Central Catholic outscored No. 5 Southern by 22 points over the ensuing two frames to roll 70-46 in the championship game of the Southern Snowball Classic on Thursday night.
The Rams (4-2) kept it close for eight minutes, trailing 19-15 after the first behind six points each from Jared Haskiell and Joel Campbell. Haskiell finished with team-high 17 points, but he was Southern’s lone double-figure scorer.
Campbell was second on the team with eight points.
Wheeling (7-0) controlled the second quarter 13-4 to lead 32-19, and it dominated the third 21-8 to enter the fourth with a decisive 53-27 advantage.
Eli Sancomb was Wheeling’s top scorer with 17 points, and Max Olejasz added 14 points.
Southern is at Mountain Ridge (2-4) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
In the consolation game of the Snowball Classic, Armstrong (7-3) routed Hereford (2-6), 60-24. Jack Valasek made six 3-pointers for a team-high 18, and Jude Craig topped Hereford with eight points.
Sancomb was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Haskiell was the Most Outstanding Player.
Tanner Diehl of Hereford, Valasek, Isaiah Keller of Southern, Olejasz and Quinton Burlenski of Wheeling Central made the all-tournament team.
Northern 46, Perry 43
BERLIN, Pa. — Northern bounced back behind 21 points from Abe Schilpp to defeat Perry Academy on Thursday night.
The Huskies (3-3) trailed 15-7 after the first period but leveled the tally at 22-all at the break. Clinging to a 32-31 edge entering the fourth, Northern outscored Perry, 14-12, to get back to .500.
Devin McKenzie joined Schilpp in double figures with 13 points. Jordan Roldan poured in a game-high 26 for Perry.
Northern won despite shooting just 8 of 20 from the free-throw line. Perry made 7 of 12.
The Huskies are at No. 1 Allegany (7-0) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Paw Paw 76, Turkeyfoot 75
PAW PAW, W.Va. — Donovan Tanouye and Greyson Corbett combined for 47 points, and Paw Paw ended a three-game losing streak by edging Turkeyfoot on Thursday night.
It was the third game in as many days for the Pirates (6-3), who dropped games to Clear Spring and Mountain Ridge at the Clear Spring Christmas Tournament.
Paw Paw trailed Turkeyfoot 23-17 after the first quarter and 43-41 at the half. The Pirates dominated the third period 22-10 to take control up 63-53 after three and held on in the fourth.
Tanouye ended with a team-high 27 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and Corbett chipped in 20 points and six rebounds. Tayler Carder was third with 13 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers.
Turkeyfoot’s Bryce Nicholson scored a game-high 31 points, followed by Zack Ryan with 22 and Daniel Younkin with 17. Other than those three, the rest of Turkeyfoot’s players combined for just five points.
