GIRLS BASKETBALL
Hamilton-Wenham 45, Gloucester 35: Tournament MVP Annie Moynihan helped the Generals (4-2) pull away in the fourth quarter to win the David Green Memorial Tournament championship in Winthrop. Gaby Campbell and Sadie Gamber (six 3-pointers in the two-game tourney), who joined Moynihan on the All-Tournament team, added 13 and 9 points, respectively, in the victory for Hamilton-Wenham. Leah Coffey, Sasha Makogonov, Grace Harres and Maren and Kate Cassidy also had key roles in the victory.
Essex Tech 40, Shawsheen 21: Nicole Mwaura scored 11 points to lead a balanced attack as Essex Tech captured the inaugural Hawks Holiday Hoops Classic with a convincing championship win over the Rams. Kennedy Moyle added seven points in the victory, Emma Dorgan added six and Adriana Lassus four as the Hawks improved to 3-3.
Bishop Fenwick 48, Medfield 43: Senior captain Cecilia Kay had 16 points and ripped down 16 rebounds to help the Crusaders (4-1) prevail in the Rivard Tournament at Oliver Ames. Sophomore Caitlin Boyle added 14 points with seven rebounds while sophomores Anna Fertonani and Celia Neilson played well with great defense and four assists each. Fenwick will now meet Walpole Friday for the tournament championship.
WRESTLING
St. John’s Prep wins Marshfield Tournament: By finishing with a resounding 261.5 points as a team, the Eagles topped the field at the Marshfield Holiday Tournament by a whopping 68.5 points over second place Taunton. Winning championships in their respective weight classes were Braedon Goes (120 lbs.), Jayden D’abeosio (157) and Alex Bajoras (285). Seconds went to Jimmy Lally (138) and Marc Pineiro (215), Will LaVellee (144) earned a third place showing; Ryan DeSousa (150) was fourth; and both Victor Mejias (132) and Vincent Bilotti (175) claimed fifth place.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Malden Catholic 4, Bishop Fenwick 0: The Crusaders dipped to 1-4 with a shutout loss on the road despite a Herculean effort in net from junior captain Ella Tucker, who made 60 saves.
BOYS HOCKEY
Andover 4, Bishop Fenwick 3: Colin Churches scored twice while Joe Lebrun scored once and assisted on another, but the Crusaders (2-4) saw their two-game winning streak snapped. Freshman goalie Warren Dubois had 31 saves in his first varsity start for Fenwick, which also got assists from captain Anthony Sasso (2), Joey Marshall (2), and Chris Ferlito. Masconomet 3, Wakefield 2: Trailing by two goals with less than five minutes remaining, the Chieftains (now 4-2) rallied in stunning fashion, including shorthanded goals by Alan Weitzman and Ben Merrill— the latter coming with 76 seconds to play — while killing a 5-minute major for the improbable win. Chris Sacco stood tall in net with 36 saves for Masconomet. Merrill finished with two goals while Weitzman and Brady Forde contributed assists.
BOYS BASKETBALL
St. John’s Prep 75, Newburyport 62: Quinn Gregoire scored 19 points and Mike Miller added 18 as the Eagles prevailed against head coach Dave Clay’s former team in the consolation round of the Commonwealth Motors Christmas Classic. Jeremiah Popanco also had a strong game for St. John’s, finishing with eight points and playing well defensively.
Methuen 68, Beverly 63: Jacob Klass had 23 points but the Panthers fell to 1-4 against a solid MVC club in the Commonwealth Motors classic at Merrimack College.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Hope 73, Salem State 57: The No. 16 ranked team in the country was too strong for the Vikings (5-6) at the CUNYAC Coaches vs. Cancer tourney in New York. Kylie Gates led the Vikes with 16 points and four assists and Ernidia Goncalves scored 14 points and had nine rebounds.
