A boat ramp on Hwy. 127 now has a new name in honor of one of its most avid fishermen.
As of the conclusion of the Dec. 18, Limestone County Commission meeting, the ramp spanning the borders of districts 1 and 4 is now officially named The June Hodges Memorial Boat Ramp.
“I had a family reach out to me several months ago. This boat ramp shares between district 4 and 1, right in the dividing line. I told them I’d have to find out if we could do this. I reached out to both commissioners, and both of them were OK with this,” commission chairman Collin Daly explained.
After clearing it with the commissioners and making sure that the naming was legally allowed, Daly moved forward with the memorial.
“There’s an older gentleman that passed away — his name was June Hodges,” Daly said. “I think he fished there about every day of his life, and his daughters and granddaughters wanted to name the boat ramp The June Hodges Memorial Boat Ramp.”
Daly wasn’t the only commissioner who was in support of honoring Hodges with the naming.
“I’ve always known Mr. Hodges. You couldn’t name it after a more avid fisherman than Mr. Hodges was,” District 1 commissioner Daryl Sammet said. “He never would show me his fishing holes, that’s the only problem I had with him.”
“I think this is a good thing. Somebody spent a lot of time at the boat ramp down on the water, enjoying some of our outdoor recreation,” District 4 commissioner LaDon Townsend added.
Daly also noted that Hodges would bring a bag with him to pick up trash when he fished and tried to “be a good steward of the land.”
